KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE INITIATIVES: EMPOWERING STUDENTS AND COMMUNITIES

Our project aims to achieve its objectives by actively involving students in a wide range of enriching activities. These activities are designed to provide valuable experiences and foster knowledge exchange among students and local communities.

During the project, students will have the opportunity to:

  1. Learn from Communities: Engage directly with communities and gain valuable insights into their challenges, mainly focusing on indigenous knowledge and understanding the specific issues faced in different settings.
  2. Appreciate Indigenous Knowledge: Develop a deep appreciation for Indigenous knowledge by actively participating in discussions that promote cultural understanding, knowledge sharing, and skill exchange between students and local communities.
  3. Foster Collaborative Thinking: Encourage collaborative thinking among students to address agreed-upon issues, fostering a sense of cooperation and teamwork.

To ensure an immersive learning experience, Brunel University London students will participate in a two-week program. This program includes comprehensive training on environmental subjects, with a special emphasis on permaculture. The training is provided by the Apricot Center in Devon. Additionally, students will visit various locations, such as urban gardens, parks, and seed banks, to further enhance their understanding.

In Zambia, students will visit the Mayukwayukwa community and gain firsthand knowledge of the challenges they face, particularly related to land degradation and food insecurity. Addressing these pressing issues, students will work closely with local partners to develop modified models of agroforestry and aquaculture practices. By incorporating indigenous and local knowledge, these models will serve as blueprints for sustainable adaptation to the unique ecological and socio-economic conditions of Mayukwayukwa.

Throughout the project, students will interact online to facilitate knowledge exchange and establish connections. This online engagement will not only deepen their understanding but also enable them to establish long-lasting links with fellow participants.

To address the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, we have implemented stringent measures to ensure the safety of all participants. Learn more about the measures adopted and how the project overcame pandemic-related obstacles.
